Description

TOULOUSE-LAUTREC Henri de (1864 - 1901) L.A.S. "Henri de Toulouse Lautrec", Nice January 13, 1880, to Countess Raymond-Casimir de TOULOUSE-LAUTREC; 4 pages in-8 (mourning). Charming letter to his paternal grandmother, during a stay in Nice. [My dear Bonne-Maman, I am not a little late, not a lot late, but immeasurably too late to offer you my best wishes for the New Year. I hope to make up for my fault by serving you some hot news. We spent a lovely day in Cannes on Saturday; the town is very pretty, and my uncle's installation is superb. It's a very nice villa by the sea, in the vicinity of the villa des Dunes, where the Empress lives. My uncle Odon rides a horse, and has hired a baby carriage for the afternoons, to go shopping in the mountains. We went with them, and climbed up to a spot from which we could see Nice and the Italian coast, and then a blue sea...!!!! The babies are doing very well and go for long walks with Soué, who is delighted. [...] My uncle Odon has bought a whole collection of paintings, and from what I hear, there are loads of them. As for us, we're not doing too badly. The boarding house is not as cheerful as last year. But winter is generally nicer, and we go out a lot. [...] Farewell my dear good-mother, I wish you a belated Happy New Year and thank you once again for your New Year's gifts.
