PECHSTEIN Max (1881 - 1955) L.A.S. "Max" with DRAWING, Berlin 28.X.1923, to Walter MINNICH; 3 pages in-4 in purple ink; in German. Letter illustrated with a large drawing at the head. To German physician and art collector Walter Minnich, on his personal misfortunes and anxieties arising from the rise of Nazism. Pechstein had just been informed that one of his friends, the German astronomer Erwin Finlay-Freundlich (1885-1964, Einstein's collaborator and director of an observatory in Potsdam), had been forced to leave Germany. and had emigrated to Istanbul. One of Pechstein's brothers died of old war wounds, and he himself had to look after seven relatives on a steadily dwindling income... Although difficult times sometimes overwhelm him, the unclouded happiness of many hours' work lifts him to the heavens... The large drawing at the head of the letter depicts a young man striding energetically out of the sea.
