Description

Andrea APPIANI (1754-1817) graveur - Francesco ROSASPINA (1762-1841)

Engraving from Les Fastes de Napoléon 16 x 45 cm (Some foxing). This plate is one of a series of 35 plates engraved by Giuseppe Longhi, Michele Bisi and Francesco and Giuseppe Rosaspina after the paintings created between 1801 and 1807 by Andrea Appiani (1754-1817) for the Hall of the Caryatids in Milan's Royal Palace at the request of Napoleon I and Prince Eugene. They depict glorified or allegorical scenes from Napoleon's epic. This ensemble is all the more important given that the Caryatid Hall was bombed and burnt down during the Second World War, leaving almost nothing of the frescoes, apart from these engravings.
