Francesco PANNINI (1745 - 1812) Views of the interior of Saint Peter's in Rome Two very rare and exceptional line engravings, hand-enhanced at the time. Gray and bistre wash, watercolor, with white and gold highlights. 56 x 87 cm Francesco Pannini was an eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century painter of architecture and landscape, draughtsman and publisher of prints. He was one of two sons of Giovanni Paolo Pannini. He collaborated with a number of renowned engravers in late 18th-century Rome, including Giuseppe Vasi and Giovanni Volpato. Around 1770, he created a series of hand-colored views of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican in Rome (six proofs of this series, in different colors, are preserved in the English Royal Collections). Continuing his father's tradition as a vedutist, he produced several topographical engravings of Roman views, many of which were later hand-colored.
