Two miniatures from a Shahnameh Polychrome pigments and gold on paper India, Delhi, circa 1800 Framing: 25 x 15 cm These two illustrations are taken from a manuscript in Firdousi's Shahnameh (Book of Kings). One depicts the hero Rustam killing the white elephant, with his mace in the shape of a cow's head. The other depicts Darius seriously wounded in Alexander's arms. The text, written in black nasta'liq, is divided into four columns. The scenes, with their vivid palette typical of Delhi painting, are set in rocky, verdant landscapes. The Delhi workshops of this period revived the Mughal tradition of the 16th - 17th centuries. (some surface alterations, good overall condition)
