Description

Buddha. Burma, XIX century. Carved and gilded wood. Inlaid with colored crystals. Wooden pedestal painted in black. It shows wear. Measurements: 120 x 52 x 20 cm (total height). Round sculpture in carved and gilded wood, from Burma (now Myanmar) and dated in the nineteenth century. It represents the Buddha in full body, standing and holding with both hands with long fingers the lower part of his sumptuous robe, which falls in neat folds and is trimmed with rhinestones. Several "lakshana" or iconographic symbols identify him. The first we see is the bun hairstyle, symbol of meditation, of spiritual life. As for the half-closed eyes and the arched eyebrows, a serene face is completed by the sketched smile, symbol of the balance and serenity of a perfect being. The elongated earlobes allude to the large earrings worn by members of the upper classes in India at the time of Sakyamuni, and represent the concepts of greatness, nobility and wisdom.
