Description

Frederic Remington (American, 1861-1909) The Mountain Man Bronze with brown patina. Signed "Frederic Remington" on the rock. Created circa 1903. Posthumous casting. Height 103 cm. Provenance: private collection in Berry since the early 20th century. Frederic Remington. A bronze sculpture entitled "The Mountain Man". Signed. Model created around 1903, posthumous cast. Related work: smaller model (70 cm) in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (no. 07.79). A painter, draughtsman and sculptor of everyday life in the American West, Remington became a veritable chronicler of the "Gold Rush" and the first myths of the United States. "Mountain Man" illustrates the daily life of a trapper and the dangers to which he and his horse are exposed. With this sculpture, a pretext for a play on different materials, the artist is able to express the oppositions between the suppleness of the bangs, the rope flapping in the wind and the softness of the furs, on the one hand, and the firmness of the horse's musculature and the precarious position of the mount and rider, on the other.
