Antoine Vestier (French, 1740-1824) Portrait of Amable de Fontanges, 1787 Canvas. Signed and dated lower left. Titled on a label on the back. Height 37.5 Width 23 cm. (faded) In a Louis XVI period gilded wood frame (Height 60 Width 51.5 cm). Provenance : - Viscount and Viscountess of Fontanges ; - their grandson, Charles-François Amable, marquis de Fontanges (1822-1907), son of the model ; - by descent. In a Louis XVI giltwood frame. Amable, comte de Fontanges (1784-1826), whose portrait was also painted by Danloux in 1795 (Maison R&C sale, Paris, December 11, 2021, no. 205), was a voltigeur captain under the First Empire. He was colonel, commanding the 55th Line during the Spanish campaign of 1823, under the orders of the Duc d'Angoulême.
