Tecali stone case with domed top, monolithic box and lid; wrought-iron hinges, hasp lock and side handles, pierced and cut with traces of red monochrome and gilding. New Spain, Old Mexico, 17th century H. 15 cm - total W. 23.2 cm - total D. 15.5 cm (a hole drilled in the front, small accidents and re-sticking, notably on the back) Tecali stone is a particular variety of alabaster-like onyx found at Tecali de Herrera in southeastern Mexico. Since pre-Columbian times, tecali has been used to create vessels, vases, statuettes, jewelry and masks. After the Spanish conquest and the establishment of the Viceroyalty of New Spain, tecali was mainly used in new churches and cathedrals, notably for liturgical furniture, as seen in Mexico City's Metropolitan Cathedral and Puebla's Cathedral.
