Description

Oudenaarde, late 16th century Tapestry wool and silk from the Life of Moses tapestry. In the foreground, the Queen implores Pharaoh, surrounded by his generals; in the background, the Egyptian cavalry is drowned in the waves. Borders of figures in medallions and vases of flowers. Two workshop marks woven into the blue braid. Height 343 Width 467 cm. (wear, especially in the silks, restoration) Provenance : - Maison Jansen, antiques and antique furniture; - Princess Radziwill's apartment, decorated by Maison Jansen, avenue Foch, Paris. Oudenarde, late 16th C. A wool and silk tapestry depicting the life of Moses. Formerly hung in the Maison Jansen decorated Parisian apartment of Princess Radziwill. A comparable tapestry, a seven-piece hanging from the Hôtel de Vogüé in Dijon, is preserved at the Château de Pouilly-en-Auxois. "The House of Radziwill is one of the oldest families in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. It appears in history in the 15th century, when the Horodlo union between the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania was signed in 1413. In 1477, the descendants of Kristinas Astikas adopted the Polish name of Radziwill. At the Diet of Princes held in Vienna in 1515, Emperor Maximilian elevated the Radziwils to the dignity of Prince of the Empire. King Sigismund Augustus of Poland, the last of the Jagellons, married Barbara Radziwill and granted the family the title of prince on July 1, 1569. In 1657, Prince Boguslaw Radziwill was appointed governor of the Duchy of Prussia by the Elector of Brandenburg. In the 20th century, Lee Radziwil was Jacqueline Kennedy's younger sister.
