From 1897 attended the Munich School of Applied Arts under E.Zimmermann, then studied independently. Study trips through Greece, France and Italy, living in Prien am Chiemsee since 1912. 1905-1913 member of the Hagenbund, founding member of the German artist group “Die Welle” and member of the Munich Secession. Illustrations for the satirical art magazines “Simplicissimus” and “Die Jugend” and also created designs for the Nymphenburg Porcelain Manufactory. Represented at the 14th Venice Biennale in 1924 with the oil painting “Tivoli”. Friendship with Hermann Hesse. 1958 Memorial exhibition in the Rosenheim Municipal Museum. Works include Albertina, Neue Pinakothek Munich, municipal collections of Darmstadt, Konstanz and Rosenheim. Honors, prizes (selection): 1912 Silver State Medal in Bautzen; 1921 Gold Medal of the Hessian State; 1925 Professor title from the State of Bavaria; 1953 Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany; Naming of a street in Prien/Chiemsee.
