After attending the Vienna School of Applied Arts for two years, he was a student of Christian Griepenkerl at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts from 1878 to 1883; then he went abroad. After his return to Vienna, he worked there as an illustrator for the 24-volume monumental work "Die österreichisch-ungarische Monarchie in Wort und Bild" (The Austro-Hungarian Monarchy in Words and Images, Verlag der k. k. Hof- und Staatsdruckerei, 1885 - 1902). His focus was the decorative sector. There are only a few of his landscapes and monumental paintings in oil. König was initially a member of the Haagengesellschaft and in 1897 a founding member of the Secession; In 1939 he became a member of the Künstlerhaus. In 1943, the latter hosted an exhibition in his memory.
