His artistic career, like his private life, was shaped by mountaineering. Although he comes from Vienna, Hess had the opportunity to explore the mountains in detail as a child, as his father was also an alpinist in addition to his military role as a field marshal. The young painter also dedicated his career to the mountains and followed in his father's footsteps.
