His artistic career, like his private life, was shaped by mountaineering. Although he comes from Vienna, Hess had the opportunity to explore the mountains in detail as a child, as his father was also an alpinist in addition to his military role as a field marshal. The young painter also dedicated his career to the mountains and followed in his father's footsteps. The long mountain hikes enabled Hess to precisely observe the mountains and snowy landscapes that can be admired in his paintings and to transfer them to the canvas.
