JAPAN Very fine carved ivory Okimono depicting a monkey showman, one perched on his shoulders in kimono holding a mallet, the second at his feet on a tree stump holding a longevity peach. The ivory is highlighted with black, red and gold lacquer. On the reverse, a two-character mark in a red rectangle. Meiji period (1868-1912) Weight : 170 g Size: 16 cm

Okimono; Japan, Meiji period, 1868- 1912. Blued bronze. It has faults. It has a seal. Measurements: 16 x 12,5 x 10 cm. The Japanese term okimono means "object to exhibit", "art object" or "decorative object". This type of objects are traditionally placed in the tokonoma, a prominent place in the home, usually in the form of a niche, or in the domestic Buddhist altar. The okimono is exclusively decorative and during the Meiji period many okimono were made for export to the West. Presents faults.
