Description

ss. XI-XVI. MANUSCRIPT: (ARCHIVAL ENSEMBLE). SET OF MANUSCRIPTS, MAINLY ON PARCHMENT, THAT FORM THE ARCHIVE OF THE ULLAR HOUSE (SANT FELIU DE CODINES). Extraordinary set containing 293 documents on parchment, of which 166 are from before 1400. Of the oldest parchments, 21 of them (including 4 framed) are dated by the year of the French king and the rest bear Hispanic dating, six from the 12th century, 55 documents dated during the 13th century, and 84 dated during the 14th century. The rest of the documents on parchment are dated from the 15th to the 17th century and are still notarized, of the same nature. A large archive on paper distributed in three large files and numerous folio-sized notebooks without covers completes the collection. All of them are related to the properties of the Ullar family, their lands, economy, production, inheritances and dowries, homemade recipes, etc. The oldest of the whole set are handwritten in Carolingian calligraphy, e.g. one from the year XXIII of the reign of Enrico (we suppose Henry I of France, 1008-1060). In other documents there are dates of other monarchs, Ludovic is repeated (with dates of year XX or XXIII of his reign, so we believe that he is Louis VII of France), also Filipi rex appears in the year XXVII of his reign (Philip I of France). There are also dates from the Hispanic era, although the oldest documents are dated to the year of the reign of the French monarch, in addition to the Ludovico, Enrico and Ludovico the young, a female regency is mentioned. All of them were given before notaries, referring to inheritances, donations, dowries and wills of the same area, many of them mention the parish of St. Mary of Folgueroles. There are also letters of population and some titles. Four of the documents are framed and are accompanied by a transcription and translation. We are before a very complete archive that sinks its roots in the 11th century and the presence of so many documents with French dating is very striking, since the places to which they refer (Sta. Maria de Folgueroles and Sant Feliu de Codines, mainly) depended on the county of Barcelona, already detached de facto from the French hegemony. Although it is true that until the signing of the Treaty of Corbeil in 1258, this separation was not officially recognized by the French monarchy, already in 988 Count Borrell II refused to remain loyal to the French king, because of the latter's refusal to help him against the Muslims. From then on the Catalan counties were governed independently until Louis IX of France renounced to continue claiming any right over them with the signing of the aforementioned treaty (counties of Barcelona, Besalú, Urgell, Osona, Cerdanya, Roussillon, Ampurias, Conflent and Girona).
