SANTIAGO PALOMARES, FRANCISCO JAVIER DE: ARTE NUEVA DE ESCRIBIR, INVENTADA POR EL INSIGNE MAESTRO PEDRO DIAZ MORANTE, E ILUSTRADA CON MUESTRAS NUEVAS, Y VARIOS DISCURSOS CONDUCENTES AL VERDADERO MAGISTERIO DE PRIMERAS LETRAS. Madrid: Imp. Antonio Sancha, 1776. Folio minor. Title page + XVIII p. + 1 h. errata + 136 p. + intaglio title page for plates + 40 plates all engraved by Asensio Mejorada. Excellent paper, very clean, some very slight rust shadow. Enc. in period parchment. Santiago Palomares was an excellent calligrapher but recognizes the work and importance of his predecessors, such as Iciar, Madariaga, Lucas, Díaz Morante, etc. of whom he speaks in the prologue. He reclaims the beauty of handwriting and laments that the need to write with speed has corrupted 'the most beautiful characters'. All plates engraved by Asensio Mejorada, probably the greatest calligraphic engraver of the 18th century. Palau 210612. Salvá 2371. Rodríguez Moñino 115, does not indicate the errata sheet, which is usually missing in many copies.
