DURGA

Bronze India 18th century Dimensions: Height 11 cm Wide 8,5 cm Depth 4,5 cm Weight: 383 grams Durga is the fierce form of Parvati and here standing on an oval lotus base at the moment of her victory over the demon Mahishasura. She is standing wide-legged on a tiger and the back of the bull whose head is tumbling down. The demon himself is crouching, with his sword still in his grasp but already his chest is pierced by Durga's weapon. The goddess is wearing a short garment and little jewellery, a three-pointed tiara on her head. With two hands she is holding the weapon, two others are raised and holding a chakra and shankha. Eyes and partly nose show heavy rub off but her devilish and victorious grin is still visible.
