JAMBHALA
Bronze firegilt Tibet 19th century Dimensions: Height 29,5 cm Wide 22 cm Depth 12 cm Weight: 4.888 grams Jambhala is the God of Wealth and Fortune and a Bodhisattva member of the Jewel family in Tibetan Buddhism. He is seated on a prostrate lion on an oval lotus flower with beaded rim. He is dressed in fine robes, pointy shoes and intricate body armour. Elaborate jewellery and a fine tiara complement his clothes. On his left knee he is holding his pet mongoose called Nehulay. Some mongoose can kill venomous snakes called naga in sanskrit. Naga are considered the guardians of treasures. The mongoose defeats the snake, therefor it spewing forth precious jewels for Jambhala. The deity's face looks grim with a goat beard and moustache and bushy eyebrows over bulging eyes.
