Description

A large piece of furniture with a central projection, inlaid with a composition of flower vases, quivers, bows and fruit on an entablature, flanked on either side by a floral trellis. It opens with a wide leaf revealing three shelves, and three drawers in the waistband. The canted uprights rest on a stepped base supported by claw feet. Rich ornamentation in chased and gilded bronze, including a frieze of tigettes and canals, garlands of flowers, rosettes, console falls, claw feet, aprons, moldings and pearls. Grey-veined red marble top with inverted cavet. Stamped several times by GROHE in Paris. Late 19th century. 118 × 163 × 61 cm. (Restored marble top, minor veneer chips, two small veneer chips preserved in an envelope will be given to the purchaser). Grohé Frères was founded by Guillaume and his brother Jean-Michel Grohé in 1847. It was one of the most famous luxury furniture houses of the 19th century, and counted among its clients King Louis-Philippe, Emperor Napoleon III and the Queen of England. The Duc d'Aumale also entrusted him with the furnishing of Chantilly. Taking part in numerous Industrial Product Shows and Universal Exhibitions, Grohé distinguished itself on many occasions. The Louvre, Carnavalet, Palais de l'Elysée and Château de Fontainebleau now house furniture by this illustrious firm.
