CHINA. Pair of important and rare metal elephants with polychrome decoration in cloisonné enamels, represented standing on rectangular pedestals, carrying on their backs gilded metal six-light lanterns. Each canted lantern is also topped with a light. The elephants are adorned with a large polychrome and gilded decoration of lotus flowers among foliage, the bases highlighted with stylized and Greek motifs. Late Qing period (1644-1911). H : 82 cm. (Minor damage and wear, one tail detached). Provenance: Paris, Espace Tajan, June 22, 1999, lot 3.
