Description

Edouard-Marcel SANDOZ (1881-1971). Murene - circa 1930. Paper-cutter sculpture in bronze with brown patina, nielloed with a geometric design in silver. Foundry Contenot. Signed on the back left side. Inscribed C 1109 Monaco. H : 6 ; W : 32 ; D : 5 cm. Bibliography: - "Sandoz, sculpteur figuriste et animalier" by Félix Marcilhac (similar model reproduced under n° 1431 p. 490-491). Note: The moray eel is a type of anguilliform fish most often found in the reefs of warm oceans. Here, Sandoz has used its long, slender form to great effect, creating a paper cutter with a design punctuated by the silvery punctuation of its smooth skin. The model was published by the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco in an edition of 40. The geometric pattern on both the jaws and tail is extremely rare.
