LE MARECHAL MAGNAN Ten-sided, ogival-shaped travel case, covered in fine shagreen, lined inside with silk and purple velvet. Open, it features two levels: A silver kettledrum emblazoned with the Marshal's coat of arms, a spoon, a fork, two knives, a teaspoon, a salt and pepper shaker, a mother-of-pearl pocketknife with two blades, and a mechanical pencil. All in hallmarked silver. Key lock. Minerva head hallmark 1, "CT" goldsmith's hallmark in pen. Length: 25 cm x 11 cm. B.E. Second Empire period (Box damaged, warped, does not close). Bernard Pierre Magnan (1791-1865) Soldier in 1809, sergeant in 1810, second lieutenant in 1811, captain in 1813, he fought from 1810 to 1813 in Spain and Portugal. Transferred to the Imperial Guard riflemen in 1814, he took part in the French campaign and was wounded at the battle of Craonne (March 6 & 7, 1814, near Laon: Napoleon I defeated Blücher). He was present at Waterloo. Battalion commander in 1817, lieutenant-colonel in 1822, he took part in the Spanish expedition of 1823. Colonel in 1827, he took part in the Algiers expedition of 1830. He was made maréchal de camp in 1835 and promoted to major general in 1845. He served in Algeria in 1846. He fought the uprisings of June 1848 in Paris and June 1849 in Lyon. He took part in Napoleon III's coup d'état on December 2, 1851. He was made Marshal in 1852.
