SUPERB COFFRET NECESSAIRE CONTAINING AN EMPEROR NAPOLEON III HUNTING RIFLE, MADE BY CARON IN PARIS Varnished ebony veneered wood case with "Boule" marquetry decoration of cut and engraved brass plates, in the center an escutcheon with an "N" supported by two dogs and surmounted by an eagle with outstretched wings. Around the rim, foliate scrolls adorned with dogs, deer, wild boar, hares and birds. Sheathed in midnight-blue velvet, marked in gold on the lid "CARON Armurier de S.M L'EMPEREUR , 20, Passage de l'Opéra" surmounted by the Imperial Coat of Arms. It contains : A pinfire shotgun, two shots, 14 gauge. Round barrels, in table, ribbon, damascus, with thunderbolts, chased on the muzzles and thunderbolts of foliage and flowers. Signed on the band "CARON ARQer DE S.M. L'EMPEREUR A PARIS" under the barrels, hallmarks on gold background "L.D." under the crown and "Léopold BERNARD - N° 7768, date 1859." Bascule à clef sous le devant, système " LEFAUCHEUX " et platines arrières signées " CARON à PARIS ", finement gravées d'animaux, chiens, cerfs, biches et volatiles ciselé de rinceaux feuillagés et fleurs. The inside of the rocker bears the number "460" and the hallmark "A. CARON Chased trigger guard decorated in gold with an "N" under an imperial crown. Large butt plate returning to the stock in inlaid, cut and chased iron with animals, foliage and flowers. Under the stock, at the rear of the trigger guard, is a silver coin with a rocaille surround, in high relief, engraved with the number "1". Light walnut stock with fine diamond pattern checkering, carved with foliage. Barrel length: 75 cm. Overall length: 115 cm. And accessories: Brass cartridge cutter with ebony handle that unscrews at the rear, ebony bourroir, ebony-handled screwdriver, brass powder pod, ebony shaper, iron, ebony and brass case extraction hook, green chagrin-covered tan leather shoulder strap, two-part ebony cleaning rod, brass fittings with two swabs. This case contains five compartments with lids featuring button-type grips for accessory storage, and the rifle is protected by a blue moire cushion with two flower ribbon grips.
