Description

CONSULAR GUARD HORSE GRENADIER SABER. Curious saber in the style and pattern of those of the Consuls' Guard. Wooden handle covered in stingray with double filigree. Rich bronze mount, engraved, chased and gilded. Short-tailed cap chased in high relief, surmounted by a lion's head encircled by an eight-sided ring featuring seven stars, skirt adorned with flowers and a palm leaf. Five-branch bronze shell guard, featuring a central spider web decorated with an "N" medallion in a laurel wreath, surmounted by an eagle surrounded by oak and laurel branches. The four arms extending from the main branch are decorated with rooster heads and terminate in leafy rosettes. Quillon with eagle head, beak towards the tip. Round-backed curved blade, engraved "Manufacture de Klingenthal Coulaux frères", with counter-edge and gutters, engraved in thirds with attributes and trophies of arms surmounted by the eagle, lictor beam and foliate scrolls, marked in the damascus "Général Duroc" on both sides. Stingray-covered wooden scabbard with three brass fittings, chased and gilded in the style and taste of the Consuls' Guard sabers, decorated with trophies, geometric patterns, flowers, water leaves, interlacing, rosettes, Liberty cap and lion's paw. Iron sting. The chappe has a notch made to draw the blade out more securely in the oriental style with curved blade. The scabbard bears a penciled label "Sabre du Gl Duroc Collection Bernard Franck n°225 SH". A.B.E. First Empire period (the handle is later, and the scabbard is of the same model and period as the saber).
