WRITTEN PORTFOLIO OF MARECHAL NEY, DUKE OF ELCHINGEN, PRINCE OF MOSKOWA. In red morocco, decorated in gold with petit fer, decorated in the center with the Great Imperial Coat of Arms with the inscription "Le Pince de la Moskowa", stamped on either side with two imperial eagles, bordered by a frieze of acanthus leaves on the sides of the pencil box decorated with urns. The pen tray has two silvered brass heart-shaped hinges and a key lock. Open, it features four compartments, two of which have silvered brass inkwells with stoppers (one damaged). The gusseted wallet is sheathed in green morocco, edged with a frieze of acanthus leaves and a string of balls, with a green flap pocket in canvas. Good condition (key missing). First Empire period. Attached is a modern silver medal from the Monnaie de Paris depicting Marechal Ney. Diameter: 46 mm. 30 x 37 cm. Provenance : -Hermann Historica sale. -Osenat sale. -Jean Louis Noisiez Collection.

NEY, Michel, Prince of Moskowa (1769-1815). Memoirs of Marshal Ney, Duke of Elchingen, Prince of Moskowa, published by his family. Paris, Fournier. 1833. 2 vol. in-8, IV and 463 pages and (1 errata leaf). 478 pages and (1 errata leaf). Covers preserved. Spines without nerves very ornate. Bindings perfectly established around 1880, in the taste of early 19th century bindings (spines sunned). A good copy of the rare first edition of Ney's Memoirs, which appears to have been printed in small numbers and not commercially distributed. A pleasant copy, complete with 2 large maps and a fold-out sketch, retaining its yellow covers, one of which, announcing that "the second issue is in press", is adorned with the imperial eagle. "These are not memoirs as such, but notes, orders and letters from the marshal arranged by his brother-in-law and incorporated into a biographical and hagiographical account" (Tulard, 1086.) The memoirs were never published in full. Handwritten 19th century bookplate: P Piercon (?) capitaine 106ème.
