Pietro Bellotto o Bellotti (Volciano 1625 - Gargnano 1700)

Pietro Bellotto or Bellotti (Volciano 1625 - Gargnano 1700) Old commoner woman Oil on canvas 89 x 75 cm The painting, of absolute quality, is fully reflected in the exact same figure of an old commoner that we find in the canvas in the Puskin Museum in Moscow titled Two Peasants Eating (photo 957, p. 866 in Venetian Painting of the Seventeenth Century, Volume Two, edited by Rodolfo Pallucchini). According to Orlandi he was a pupil of Girolamo Forabosco, but his naturalism was certainly influenced by the caricatures of Nicolas Lagneau and the popular motifs etched by Jacques Callot. He was renowned for his half-figures drawn with caricatured expressions and minutely investigated. His incisive brushwork and dry subject matter cause his painting technique to be likened to that of some northern Caravaggists. He was most likely influenced by the subjects and pictorial modes of Eberhard Keil, Monsù Bernardo, thanks to whom the pitocchi subjects typical of the Flemish and Dutch came to Venice.
