Girolamo Mocetto (Murano 1458 ca. - 1531 ca.)

Girolamo Mocetto (Murano c. 1458 - c. 1531). Biblical episode of the war between Israelites and Amalekites Oil on panel 113 x 110 cm The figures of the horsemen loading a mule in the center and the two figures on the left accompanied by the horse seen from behind are found in Mocetto's engraving, preserved in the Albertina in Vienna, titled Israelites and Amalek after the fight. According to some sources, he was a pupil of first Alvise Vivarini and then Giovanni Bellini, while in the art of engraving he followed in the footsteps of Mantegna. In particular, his works show little interest in the antiquarian subject matter typical of Mantegna, favoring a simpler and more narrative form, characterized by figures posed in plastic poses and isolated in space, suggesting the acquisition of Carpaccio's manner. These details bring him closer to the Veronese school of his time, the city where he worked, particularly the artist Domenico Morone. His adaptation to Bellini's manner, which has no exact historical reference, probably occurred because of the works disseminated in the Veneto by both the master and Cima da Conegliano and Bartolomeo Montagna. The high point of his career was the execution of the decoration of part of the painted stained glass window of the right transept in the Dominican church of Ss. John and Paul, which he signed in the left panel of the lower register. Girolamo Mocetto (Murano ca. 1458 - ca. 1531) Biblical Episode of the War Between Israelites and Amalekites.
