Pier Francesco di Jacopo Foschi (Florence 1502 - 1567) and aides Portrait of a noblewoman with book Oil on panel 88 x 74 cm Thanks to Professor Michele Danieli for studying the work and confirming the attribution. The work is housed in a very fine 17th-century Florentine frame, which can be traced back to the models commissioned by the Medici, which can be seen in the Pitti Palace and the Uffizi Gallery. He was born in Florence to a family of painters. His father, his first master, worked in the workshop of Sandro Botticelli. He then trained with Andrea del Sarto; in fact, his early production highlights the master's restrained classicism, characterized by the drawing scheme of refined grace and the delicate use of light and vivid color. Twenty years old, he began his pictorial activity early as an independent painter, receiving important commissions from the Medici, Pucci and Torrigiani. Between 1536 and 1537 he participated in the decoration of the loggia of the villa at Careggi together with Bronzino, led by Pontormo. This was followed by the important creation of three altarpieces for the church of Santo Spirito. Now an influential artistic personality in Florence he was involved along with Vasari, Bronzino, Michele di Ridolfo, Francesco da Sangallo and Giovann'Angelo Montorsoli in the reforming commission of the Compagnia di San Luca in the Accademia del Disegno. In the last years of his life, still very active, he participated in the major collective undertakings promoted by the newly founded Accademia: the ephemeral apparatuses for Michelangelo's solemn funeral and those for the wedding of Francis I to Joan of Austria. Extremely important was his portrait work, as evidenced by the Portrait of a Lady with Book preserved in the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, the Portrait of a Young Man Braiding a Wreath in the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, and a Portrait of a Man preserved in the Uffizi Gallery.
