Olivuccio da Ciccarello (Camerino ? - Ancona 1439)

Olivuccio da Ciccarello (Camerino ? - Ancona 1439) Virgin and Child Tempera on panel with gold ground 39,5 x 26 cm Thanks to Professor Alessandro Delpriori, University of Camerino, for providing the attribution. Until 2002, his importance was known given the fresco of the 'Adoration of the Magi that the Duke of Milan Filippo Maria Visconti commissioned from him in 1429 in the Holy House of Loreto, but no work was certain. In that year, thanks to Matteo Mazzalupi, who read exactly his signature in the Crucifix preserved at Macerata Feltria historians were finally able to unveil many of his works that until then had been catalogued, due to the misreading of Carolus instead of Ciccarellus until then persisted, under the name of Carlo da Camerino. Olivuccio probably trained with Andrea de Bruni, from Bologna, who was active in the Marche region, between Fermo, Corridonia and Tolentino. He was a most important exponent of the Marche School between the 14th and 15th centuries, along with his adopted son Giambono di Corrado da Ragusa and Bartolomeo di Tommaso da Foligno. His pictorial expression is characterized by the sharp definition of the outlines, sometimes with marked contours, which detach from the golden phono his holy figures, hieratic in their icastic representation. A painter of flair and quality, he was able to interweave his initial Umbrian-Marchigiana training with the figurative contributions that arrived, via Ancona from Venice, along with Emilian and Roman influences, achieving an elegant and cultured pictorial language.
