Andrea Busati (Scutari metà del XV secolo circa - Venezia 1528 circa)

Andrea Busati (Scutari mid-fifteenth century c. - Venice c. 1528) Saint John the Baptist in a landscape Oil on canvas 72.5 x 58.5 cm To confirm the attributive thesis, observe the four paintings mentioned in the card below. Very close physiognomic and especially stringent landscape similarities emerge. From the scant biographical information, it is believed that he moved in the mid-15th century from Shkodra to Venice with his family. A brother monk lived in the convent of the Servants of Mary, while two others, Luca Antonio and Francesco, were painters. He described himself as a pupil of Giovanni Bellini, who along with Gian Battista Cima da Conegliano, were his sources of inspiration. For scholars, his artistic activity is documented by three paintings: St. Anthony of Padua in the Civic Museum in Vicenza, signed "Andreas Bussatis in Venecia pinxit," then the Lamentation over the Dead Christ in the National Gallery in London and St. Mark Enthroned between Saints Andrew and Francis in the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice. To these three can be added Madonna and Child with Saints John the Baptist and Nicholas of Tolentino, preserved at the Brooklyn Museum in New York. After the will drawn up by Busati in 1528, there is no further news of his existence during his lifetime.
