LOUIS XVI May 10, 1774 - January 21, 1793 LOUIS XVI D G... His nude bust to the left. Seated dog, mark of François II Tatin. R/. Two rectangular shields bearing the arms of France and Navarre. Underneath, workshop letter. Poirier, mark of Louis Salomon Poirier. Year at the end of the legend. Flowered edge. ♦ Fr 474; Gad 363 Double-louis d'or au buste nu 1786 T = Nantes. (15,24 g) With all its freshness of strike. Mirror flan. Slightly rubbed on obverse, otherwise superb. Copy from the Trésor de Vendée** sale December 12, 2008 n°147 **Louis-Charles du Chaffault de Besné was a naval officer in the service of His Majesty the King of France. In 1790, he retired and settled in the Vendée. He received a pension of 9,000 livres a year. During the Vendée wars, the admiral played an active role in defending the king against the Republican armies. In 1793, his château was looted and burned. The Count was arrested and imprisoned in the Luzançay prison. He died in prison on June 29, 1794, aged 86. Foreseeing the danger, he had taken the precaution of hiding and burying all his wealth, including 50,000 pounds in gold. In 1993, 200 years later, the "Trésor de Vendée" was discovered.
