LOUIS XIV 1643 - 1715 Silver shield with long fuse 1653 O = Riom. (27,08 g) Chipped metal. Chipped blank. T.B. Copy from the Trésor de Montrichard** sale on June 6, 2008 at the Orangerie du Château de Cheverny (Moulinsart) n°253 **Treasure of Montrichard". In March 2007, a young Portuguese mason set about digging a trench to build a wall in one of the oldest houses in Montrichard (Loir et Cher), the one that housed Queen Anne of Brittany in May 1506. He unearthed a sandstone pot containing almost 600 gold and silver coins. His inverted reading of the plan led him to dig in the wrong place. Without this error, the treasure would have remained buried forever! The treasure consisted of 573 coins, 208 of them gold. French royal coins from Louis XIII and Louis XIV, and Spanish coins that circulated jointly on French territory at the time. Read the full story in Monnaie magazine.com.
