James V was born on April 10, 1512 in Linlithgow and died on December 14, 1542 at Falkland Palace. He was the son of James IV and Margaret Tudor. His mother was regent. In 1636 he married Madeleine de Valois in France, and a year after Madeleine's death, he married Marie de Guise. They had three children: Jacques, Arthur and Marie (the future Marie Stuart). This coin, known as "la pièce au bonnet", is a real enigma. It has the peculiarity of having the reverse of a ducat and a weight of 4.05g, too light to be a ducat and too heavy to be a 2/3 ducat. This is the first Scottish coin to bear a date. See Joan E.L. Muray's publication "The first gold coinage of Mary queen of Scots".
