Description

217. MALLETTE of 6 red velvet trays (with pads) containing study coins in electroplating belonging to Jean-Baptiste COLBERT DE BEAULIEU. This collection was given to his son as a memento after his death. It contains 173 specimens of Statères, Hémistatères, Quarts de statère, Drachmes, Deniers, Potins, Bronzes....(reproductions of 107 gold and divisional statères and 66 silver and bronze). Attached: a specimen (galvano) of the shield of Anne de Bretagne dated 1498 and a pewter specimen (fake Becker) of a tetradrachm of Clazomenes (city of Ionia) in the name of Magistrate Mandronax. Very good condition. Electroplating is an electrolytic goldsmithing technique used to reproduce objects using a mold connected to the negative pole of a battery, which is then covered with a layer of metal. The principle of electrolysis is used to apply a metallic deposit to the surface of an object by means of a direct electric current, the metal initially being in the form of cations in solution in a solvent (usually water).
