REX * SICILI * 1542 (punctuated by rosettes). Crowned shield with crowned eagle between I-P. (Giovanni Andrea Papardo). ♦ Fr 664; Spahr 132 Gold Scudo 1542 (3.29 g) Extremely rare. Distorted blank. Very fine. In 1501, King Ferdinand II of Aragon conquered Naples and reunited the two kingdoms under the authority of the nascent Spanish monarchy. The title of "King of Sicily on both sides of the Straits" was borne by all Spanish monarchs until the War of Spanish Succession. The Order of the Golden Fleece was founded by Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, on January 10, 1430, on the occasion of his marriage to Isabella of Portugal. The order's name was inspired by the Greek myth of the Golden Fleece, and later supplemented by the biblical story of Gideon, a symbol of spiritual strength, as indicated by the tapestry adorning the chapter houses from 1456 onwards. Tradition has it that Philip the Good created the order in homage to his mistress, Marie de Rumbrugge, whose hair was golden.
