In-8, tan boards, red title page, speckled edges (modern binding). Rare first French edition of Letters from Illinois, published in Philadelphia in 1818, and illustrated with a folding engraved map. Born into a family of Quakers, the author emigrated with his family to the United States in 1817, founding an agricultural colony in the state of Illinois. This collection of letters includes his correspondence during his first year with friends and future settlers. It contains a wealth of practical information about his life and the conditions of his settlement. A good copy. Some spotting at the beginning of the volume.

It is preceded by a preface and a study of slavery in the United States by Édouard Laboulaye, and is followed by Remarques sur la question de l'esclavage, and Lettres à M. Clay sur l'annexion du Texas aux États-Unis. A good copy. Some foxing.
