Theodore Roosevelt commissioned sculptor Auguste Saint Gaudens to embellish U.S. currency. He designed the "Saint-Gaudens" or double-eagle $20 coin, which was produced in the U.S. mints from 1907 to 1933. Its name is therefore due to its designer. It is considered by many to be the most beautiful of all American coins. Saint-Gaudens died in 1907, having designed both the eagle ($10 coin) and the double eagle, but before the designs were finalized for production.
