Traditional Portuguese monarchical coat of arms, argent, with five azure escutcheons each charged with five silver bezants, and a gules border charged with seven gold castles. The five azure escutcheons symbolize the five Muslim kings defeated by King Afonso Henriques at the Battle of Ourique in 1139; the five bezants on each escutcheon represent the stigmata of Christ; and the castles symbolize the seven castles of the Moorish kingdom of Algarve, the last part of mainland Portugal to be conquered in 1249. The Battle of Ourique (southern Portugal) took place on July 25, 1139, during which Portuguese forces defeated those led by the Almoravid governor of Cordoba. Minas Gerais: federated state in southeastern Brazil, home to the town of Ouro Preto, or "Black Gold", founded in 1711 by the "bandeirantes", the gold diggers who mined the region's rivers.
