LOUIS XVI 1774 - 1793 LUD - XVI - D - G-.... His bare head to the left, a protuberance on the forehead. DUVIV on the edge of the bust. Heart, mark of Jean Louis Beyerlé. R/. CHRS -....- IMPER. Molette, mark of Jean Guérin. Two rectangular shields crowned with the arms of France and Navarre and vintage. Workshop letter: (dot) BB linked. The scandal of the "à la corne" louis broke shortly after the discovery of the fraud on the title of the Strasbourg gold louis. This famous coin depicts the king with a protuberance on his forehead like a horn, alluding to the misfortune of the king deceived by the queen. The minting of these louis after the necklace affair and the imprisonment of Cardinal de Rohan, bishop of Strasbourg, imprisoned in August 1785 and acquitted in May 1786, may have been the result of the Cardinal's revenge.
