BÉNÉVENT - GRIMOALD III and CHARLEMAGNE may 788 - november/december 806 GRIM - ⧾ - VAL DX. His crowned bust facing, wearing the Chlamydia and holding a cruciger globe. R/. DOMS (four globules) CAR RX. Cross potentate cantoned with G-R. In exergue, VICA. ♦ Fr 106 p.543 ; MIR 185 ; CNI p. 155, 7 ; BMC Vandals p. 170, 1-2 Gold Tremissis (third of a penny) (788-792). (1,23 g) Very rare. Superb. The first monetary issues of the Lombard duchy of Benevento were anonymous, but under Gisulf I (689-706), the duke's initial appeared on the coin. It was not until Grimoald III that the sovereign's name was written in full.
