He was the son of a Florentine who had moved to Troyes either in the company of Florentine artists or to pursue business and banking interests. He was a canon in the royal and collegiate church of Saint-Estienne de Troyes and clerk to its chapter. He was associated with several poets of his time, notably Michel d'Amboise, to whom he dedicated his entire theater. He formed the project of transporting the intrigues and tableaux de mœurs of Italian comedy to the French stage, which is why his comedies are deeply inspired by Italian comedies, which he adapted for the French theater by shaping them, transforming them, deleting roles, modifying plans, doing everything to make the plays interesting to a French audience. Le Laquais is taken here from Dolce's Ragazzo, La Veuve de la Vedova by Nicolo Buonaparte, Les Esprits de l' Aridosio by Lorenzino de Medici, Le Morfondu de Gelosia by Grazzini, Les Jaloux by I. Gelosi by Vincent Gabbiani and Les Escolliers de la Zecca by Razzi. The original edition appeared in Paris in 1579. Spine slightly faded.
