Description
ICON of the Virgin of the Sign (or Platytera). Moscow, first third of the 18th century. Two saints on the border. Oklad in silver with a crowned nimbus also in silver. Missing Christ's nimbus, which was probably attached to the two rings at the bottom of the Virgin's nimbus. Tempera on wood. Marks: Moscow (?), 1732 and assayer's initials ? [incomplete strike]. On the back, an inscription in black ink giving the weight of the oklad with its crowned nimbus: 14 Z[olotniki] or 60 g. Dimensions: 16 x 13 cm.
