Bound in full contemporary red morocco, smooth spine richly decorated with fillets and small irons, triple gilt fillet framing the boards, interior lace, gilt edges. Ex libris Thomas Phiip Earl de Gey, Wrest Park and C.-A. and C. Baldwin. CELEBRARY EDITION DITE DES FERMIERS GENERAUX printed in 800 copies, Eisen's masterpiece, an emblematic book of the 18th century, it is illustrated with 2 portraits: that of La Fontaine after Rigaud, engraved by Ficquet and that of Eisen, after Vispré, engraved by Ficquet; 80 figures by Eisen, engraved by Aliamet, Baquoy, Choffard, Delafosse, Flipart, Lemire, Leveau, de Longueil and Ouvrier; 4 vignettes and 53 culs-de-lampe by Choffard, the last of which contains his portrait. In addition to the Contes de La Fontaine, it contains a Dissertation sur la Joconde by Boileau and five other tales attributed to Autereau, Vergier and Trousset de Valincourt. As for the condition of the figures, "Le Cas de conscience" (vol. II, pp. 142-143) is in the uncovered state, as is "Le Diable de Papefiguière" (vol. II, pp. 148-149). Cohen 558 ff. A fine copy.
