"BAZUBAND". BOX - MINIATURE CORAN AMULET octagonal shape, the lid chased with a cartouche featuring a sura in a frame of foliage, the side decorated with blank reserves. Fitted with two small calligraphic scroll handles. (Wear and tear). Iran or India, late 19th century. A MINIATURE OCTAGONAL QUR'AN BOX AND COVER, IRAN OR INDIA, LATE 19TH CENTURY. HEIGHT. 2.1 CM (13/16 IN.) - DIAM. 5.5 CM (2 3/16 IN.) GROSS WEIGHT: 42 g. NOTE These boxes are called "bazuband" (armband) because they were attached to the arm with string. Used as amulet cases, they may also have been used to store miniature Korans or selected verses considered to hold special protective powers.
