Two calligraphic compositions in ta'liq, Iran, 16th century and 20th century Persian ta'liq calligraphies on paper, handwritten obliquely and later mounted on album pages. The first, attributable to Khâje Ekhtiyâr Monshi, consists of 5 lines alternately in black ink and gold. Mounted on an album page with two spandrels illuminated in gold and polychrome and a cartouche with floral decoration, the whole surrounded by illuminated borders and a wide brown margin powdered with gold; the second, of almost square format, with 6 horizontal lines and 2 vertical lines in black ink, mounted on an album page with several illuminated borders and a wide red margin. Dim. calligraphies: 10 x 18.5 cm and 12.5 x 12.2 cm; dim. album pages: 29.7 x 21.4 cm and 28.6 x 24.1 cm Bends, wear, light stains and foxing, a few accidents. Provenance: Collection of M. Mohajer Khâje Ekhtiyâr ibn Alî Gunabadi Monshi (d.1567), is considered one of the greatest calligraphers of the ta'liq style. In addition to his profession as a calligrapher, he worked as a secretary at the court of Safavid prince Sultan Mohammad Mîrza, son of Shah Tahmasp. His signed pieces are dated between 1538 and 1562. For an example of calligraphy signed by this artist, see album page F1929.63 from the National Museum of Asian Art, Freer Gallery of Art, Washington, dated 1541. The first, of the gulzar type, of two monumental handwritten lines in poly-lobed reserves with a gilded vegetal semiset set against a gilded background. Signed lower left Mohammad Hossein; the second, a little later, a siyâh mashq calligraphy exercise, with multidirectional lines, signed Mirzâ Mohammad Rezâ Kalhor and sealed. Mounted on an album page with colored borders, one decorated with a frieze of orange foliage on a pink background. Dim. calligraphy: 21.4 x 16.7 cm, dim. album page: 39.4 x 29.9 cm, folds, wear, stains, minor restorations; the second, poem from Sa'adi's Bustan calligraphed in nasta'liq shekaste, Persian verses spread over two columns, some elements in red ink.
