Claude Mellan (1598 Abbeville - Paris 1688) - The Shroud of St. Veronica Copperplate engraving on firm laid paper. (1649). 43 x 31.5 cm (sheet size 60.5 x 44.1 cm). Le Blanc III, 3 no. 33 II (of II); Préaud 21; Montaiglon 25. Excellent, fine and clear impression of the famous sheet, engraved in a single spiral line, without any cross-hatching. The rising and falling line forms the face of Jesus in Veronica's sweatcloth; thus, according to the inscription, the "one and only" (Jesus) is created by "a single" (line). Mellan learned this skill from Francesco Villamena, whose pupil he was after his arrival in Rome in 1624. However, the present depiction was not created until 1649, when the artist was living in Paris again. Wide margins. - Few stains, defects to the edges, some with tears. The corners bumped and slightly soiled in the margins, otherwise in good condition. Taxation: taxed by difference plus 7% (VAT: Margin Scheme (non EU))ne ony lots.
