Lucas Cranach D. Elder (1472 Kronach - Weimar 1553) - The first tournament leaf Woodcut on laid paper. (1506). 28 x 38.4 cm (sheet size). Bartsch VII, 293, no. 124; Hollstein 116 II (of II); Schuchardt 129. Excellent, strong and even impression of the very rare sheet. With a margin up to 10 mm wide around the framing line. Cranach depicts a large show tournament on a demarcated square, watched more or less attentively by many onlookers from all classes of the population. Emperor Maximilian had given the tournament a new impetus, wanting to promote knightly skills. - With a smoothed centrefold on the verso and old mounting strips in the upper corners. Paper somewhat brownstained and darkened. A small marginal tear at the upper edge, otherwise in good condition. Very rare! Provenance: Adalbert Freiherr von Lanna (1836-1909), Prague, with stamp on verso (Lugt 2773). Taxation: Taxed by difference plus 7% (VAT: Margin Scheme (non EU))ne ony lots.
