Description

DU TRONCHET (Étienne).

Lettres missives et familières. With the Monologue of Divine Providence to the French people. [...]. Reveües, corrigées & augmentées de plusieurs Lettres amoureuses, tirées tant de l'Italien du Bembe, que de plusieurs autres Autheurs. Paris, Hilaire Le Bouc, 1596. In-12, red jansenist morocco, interior lace, gilt edges (Trautz-Bauzonnet). Edition shared between several booksellers, including Hilaire Le Bouc, the widow Drobet and Marc Orry. Lettres missives et familières first appeared in 1568-1569 in Paris with Lucas Breyer (see previous lot), before being reprinted many times with various additions. The work was intended for practitioners of the epistolary genre, to whom Du Tronchet wished to offer model letters. In his preface, he invites them to reflect on how to be a good secretary, and describes three types: bastard secretaries, engendered by the pampering of ignorance, barbaric secretaries and legitimate secretaries. Philippe Renouard, in his directory of Parisian printers and booksellers, could only find one copy addressed to Hilaire Le Bouc: this is the one from the Lignerolles library (II, 1894, no. 2106). Engraved bookplate bearing the initials PR and the motto Notre-Dame protège la France et la lignée de nos rois, undetermined. Renouard, Imprimeurs & libraires parisiens du XVIe siècle, III, n°339 bis. - Diane Barbier-Mueller, Inventaire..., n°325.
