DAVITY (Pierre).

Work without work. Avec le Tumbeau de Madame la Duchesse de Beaufort. Lyon, Thibaud Ancelin, 1601. In-12, vellum, gilt fillet, gilt foliage medallion in center, traces of binding, smooth spine decorated with fillets and a repeated fleurette, gilt edges (Binding of the period). Second edition of the first collection of poems by Pierre Davity (or d'Avity), a poet from Tournon, Vivarais, originally published in 1599 and dedicated to the Duc de Vendôme. Preceded by introductory pieces by poets from the Dauphiné and Lyon regions, the work includes two short histories galantes, the dialogues La Courtisane mariée and La Belle dédaigneuse, 77 missive letters, numerous sonnets, epigrams, stanzas and epitaphs. There are also two charming pieces written for Mademoiselle de Reynier's weasel: Petite follastre Belette, Bestelette follastrelette [...]. Gustave Reynier, in Le Roman sentimental avant l'Astrée (p. 175, note 2), underlined the interest of Davity's letters for the study of the cultural and social life of the period in the Vivarais, Dauphiné and Rhône valley. An attractive copy, preserved in its attractive contemporary gilt vellum. It appeared in the Berès bookshop catalog, Des Valois à Henri IV, under no. 61. From the Genard library (1882, n°192) (damaged bookplate). J. P. Barbier-Mueller, IV-1 n°79. - Lachèvre, Recueils collectifs de poésies, t. I, p. 159. - Diane Barbier-Mueller, Inventaire..., no. 143.
