In-8, red morocco, boards covered with a fanfare decoration ornamented with small irons, ornamented spine, interior lace, gilt edges (David). First French edition of this book of emblems, published the same month (September 1552) as the Latin edition also given by Macé Bonhomme under the title Picta Poesis. Beautifully illustrated, with 103 woodcut vignettes in the text, taken from the Latin edition, formerly attributed to Bernard Salomon, but now considered for the most part to be among the finest works by Pierre Vase, also known as Pierre Eskrich. A superb copy, in a remarkable fanfare binding signed by David. Adams, Rawles & Saunders, French Emblem Books, F.084. - Baudrier, t. First collective edition, partly original. Mamert Patisson published this edition barely a year after Remy Belleau's death. The first volume contains Amours et nouveaux eschanges des pierres precieuses, the two days of La Bergerie and Apparences celestes d'Arat. The second volume contains a translation of Odes d'Anacréon et des petites inventions et autres poésies de Belleau, much expanded from the 1574 edition, as well as a comedy. Le Tombeau de Remy Belleau (6 f.), which closes this collection, is made up of Greek, Latin and French pieces by Dorat, Ronsard, Baïf, Desportes and others. The title page of the second volume reads: Les Odes d'Anacreon... traduictes en François par Remy Belleau. Avec quelques petites Hymnes de son invention, & autres diverses poesies: Ensemble une comédie. A very fine copy in a handsome binding by Niedrée.

The Œuvres poétiques contain a Latin opuscule De coelestibus Asterismis Poëmatium (4f. including a title page), followed by the Recueil des Nouvell'œuvres poetiques (20 folios), both in first editions. Mantice... and Solitaire premier... are volumes generally found following the Œuvres poétiques. Œuvres poétiques. As these two pieces were published by the same publisher, we may well ask whether they are not an integral part of the edition. A handsome engraved title for Œuvres poétiques and a title frame for Solitaire premier. Staining to several leaves.
